We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dick Sarns, a dear friend and longtime supporter of Packard Health. Alongside his beloved wife Norma, Dick served as an Honorary Chair and key donor to our Campaign for Expansion, and their dedication to accessible, compassionate care has left a mark on this community that will endure for generations.

A visionary engineer and entrepreneur, Dick dedicated his life to making the world a healthier, better place — giving generously of his time, resources, and heart to the causes and community he loved.

As Dick liked to say: “To be continued.” His legacy at Packard Health will be. Our deepest condolences to Norma, their family, and all who loved him.

Packard Health is grateful to be selected (again) as a featured charity in the Probility Ann Arbor Virtual Marathon & “Mile-A-Day” Marathon Challenge “Spring Edition”. Prioritizing behavioral health, including mental health, has never been as important as it is now. The increase in need, especially during the uncertainty that has come with COVID-19, has resulted in offering telehealth appointments and the hiring of our first Director of Behavioral Health.

Due to the lingering concerns of COVID-19, the events leading up to the larger in-person marathon in the fall will be virtual but still every bit impactful. For every designated donation by registrants to Packard Health, Epic Races donates an additional $3. Participation directly helps Packard Health patients who live in your community and are being assisted in overcoming their behavioral/mental health challenges.

Important to know – all movers, not just runners, are encouraged to participate! The goal is to be physically active by completing one mile a day. This can take place just about anywhere but if you want to change it up, there are lots of places to walk in Washtenaw County.

Packard Health strongly supports Proposal C, the proposed ballot initiative to fund affordable housing in the City of Ann Arbor. If approved, the proposal would be an enormous step forward to address housing segregation, health disparities, and housing insecurity, and homelessness in the region, issues many of our patients face. It would also be a giant step forward in the local community’s efforts to address public health and food insecurity as housing instability directly impacts an individual’s health.

If passed, Proposal C would raise approximately $6.3 million per year for 20 years and would support the development of 1,500 affordable housing units for about 3,700 people. The units would be targeted at households earning zero to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), which currently corresponds in the Ann Arbor area to four-person households earning less than $60,900 per year. The plan would go a long way toward meeting the need identified in Washtenaw County’s 2015 Housing Affordability and Economic Equity Analysis, which called for nearly 2,800 affordable housing units by 2035.

We’re Moving!

Sending the biggest thank you to Ypsilanti Community Schools! Their generosity and flexibility for the past five months has allowed Packard Health to quickly respond to the need for COVID-19 testing locations, particularly in Washtenaw County. Our testing site staff has expressed over and over how accommodating the leadership of Ypsilanti Community Schools has been and how wonderful the partnership and experience was. With the school year quickly approaching, it’s come time to relocate.

While we are sad to go, Packard Health is very excited to be moving its COVID-19 testing site to Second Baptist Church! Our current location at the Perry Early Learning Center will be closed on Monday, August 24 for moving. We look forward to working with Reverend George Waddles, Jr. when our testing location reopens on Tuesday, August 25 at 301 S. Hamilton Street, Ypsilanti, MI 48197.

But how many people combined all of them into one activity? Well, at least 15.

Carter Yoga Virtual Studio brought a group together to produce a collaborative art piece with the purpose of supporting the work of a local non-profit. The result, a painting titled “Inside Looking Out” (pictured below), that raised $450 to benefit Packard Health.

“My goal is to support my community, as well as my family, since all of the local yoga studios had to close,” said Carter Scott, owner of Carter Yoga Virtual Studio. “I wanted the entire process to be a full-on community activity. This included not only the creation of the art piece itself, but solicited input on every aspect involved, such as the name, the starting bid price, where to donate the funds, etc.”

On April 4th, participants virtually gathered via Zoom and together chose colors, determined how to apply the paint, shared their feelings about the piece, and enjoyed each others company.

Carter explained, “I put the art up for auction on Facebook for a total of seven days and there was a bit of a bidding war at the end.”

Namaste to Carter and everyone who came together to create such a vibrant and unique piece to benefit Packard Health!

Think about the last time you were hospitalized. You recovered enough to go home – to family and friends to help with medications and personal care. Watchful eyes, home-cooked meals, and your own bed eased your pain and sped your recovery.

If you had no home to return to, the story would have been very different.

The new Recuperative Care program at the Delonis Center is a healing place for people discharged from the hospital with no home to go to. Packard Health nursing staff provide care to recovering clients in a 6-bed, semi-private area on the second floor.

Being homeless can increase the odds of re-hospitalization within 30 days almost four-fold. The Recuperative Care program breaks this cycle with shelter, time to recover, medical supervision, case management, and importantly, a bridge to permanent housing. “The program goal of all of us here at the Shelter is to discharge no one to homelessness,” says Ravi Vadlamudi, MD, Packard Health physician and Medical Director of the Recuperative Care Program.

“The program delivers on so many levels, from compassionate care to a bridge to housing to cost savings. This is a great program and Packard is excited to be a part of it,” says Dr. Ravi.

The post Hospital.
