Packard Health is grateful to be selected (again) as a featured charity in the Probility Ann Arbor Virtual Marathon & “Mile-A-Day” Marathon Challenge “Spring Edition”. Prioritizing behavioral health, including mental health, has never been as important as it is now. The increase in need, especially during the uncertainty that has come with COVID-19, has resulted in offering telehealth appointments and the hiring of our first Director of Behavioral Health.

Due to the lingering concerns of COVID-19, the events leading up to the larger in-person marathon in the fall will be virtual but still every bit impactful. For every designated donation by registrants to Packard Health, Epic Races donates an additional $3. Participation directly helps Packard Health patients who live in your community and are being assisted in overcoming their behavioral/mental health challenges.

Important to know – all movers, not just runners, are encouraged to participate! The goal is to be physically active by completing one mile a day. This can take place just about anywhere but if you want to change it up, there are lots of places to walk in Washtenaw County.

Packard Health, like the rest of the world, has been learning how to best operate during a global pandemic. There have been many curves to navigate and flatten and, contrary to the year itself, clarity hasn’t always been 20/20. But, if nothing else, Packard Health has built a strong team and is overcoming challenges daily.

As the only Federally Qualified Health Center in Washtenaw County, we care for some of the most vulnerable people in the area. Our service area covers two of the hardest hit COVID-19 zip codes in the County, 48197 and 48198. Our central location and loss of a beloved staff member to COVID-19 compelled us to work even harder in response to COVID-19.

At the end of March, Packard Health began offering its 12,000 patients the opportunity to schedule telehealth appointments to avoid unnecessary in-office contact. Since then, Packard Health providers have conducted almost 14,000 telehealth appointments.

Packard Health’s greatest response endeavor began in May with the opening of its COVID-19 testing site at Perry Early Learning Center in Ypsilanti in collaboration with Washtenaw County Department of Public Health and Ypsilanti Community Schools. Since the opening, there has been an ebb and flow of activity, numerous weather concerns for our staff, and two relocations. The first site change was to Second Baptist Church in Ypsilanti, thanks to the generosity of Reverend George W. Waddles, Jr. and his parish.

On November 9, Packard Health moved its COVID-19 testing site to its new drive-thru CarePort at 2650 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. The repurposed garage is open to patients and the public for COVID-19 testing as well as for flu vaccinations. Shortly following the move, the pandemic took another concerning turn, making our work and response even more critical.

In an effort to better share the realities of our frontline testing site, we kindly asked a member of our COVID-19 testing team, Emily Chapin, to share her experience:

Dr. Ravi Vadlamudi was in Nepal during the 2015 earthquake, and in Louisiana in the aftermath of Katrina. Like each and every Packard Health care provider, Dr. Ravi has a personal store of exceptional commitment and compassion. He’s drawn to help people in need.

Karen Koeppe, Certified Diabetes Educator and Dietitian, has worked with patients to manage their chronic disease for 18 years. She created the Packard Pacers, a group of patients that walk the trails of County Farm Park each summer.

On Sunday, March 24, 2019 Ravi and Karen will join a dozen other Packard Health staff in the Probility Ann Arbor Marathon. The community health center is a featured charity of the event.

Packard Health was founded 46 years ago with the vision that everyone deserves access to quality health care. Packard Health provides integrated, team-based care, regardless of patients’ ability to pay, type of illness or circumstance.

Picture Packard Health – on any given day, exam rooms are filled with at-risk patients. They have complex medical needs, addiction and mental health issues, immigrant concerns, and an array of social barriers to healthcare. They are the most vulnerable in our community.

It takes uncommon caregivers to effectively connect with the most vulnerable – people like Packard’s Dr. Ronald Romero, who received 2018 Clinician of the Year Award from Michigan Primary Care Association. People like Ravi Vadlamudi and Karen Koeppe, who will be on the course March 24^th, urged on by a cheering team of Packard Health volunteers.

Everyone deserves the best opportunity to achieve health. That’s the idea that Packard Health runs on.

Heartfelt thanks to the The First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor for a grant award to purchase home blood pressure monitors for low income, at risk patients, as well as oral nutritional supplements for our homeless and cancer patients.

Patients who receive a monitor will also receive 1:1 counseling by our Chronic Disease Care Manager, Karen Koeppe, on appropriate set-up and use, along with lifestyle counseling (DASH diet, exercise) to help with blood pressure management.

For 46 years Packard Health has opened our doors and reached out to the most vulnerable and under-served in our community. Primary and mental health care are integrated under one roof, with an array of supportive services as well, creating wrap-around care for patients with complex medical conditions and complicated lives. Dr. Kaila Queen is running the 5K. ” I’m not fast, but I’m all in on this community event!”

Addiction Treatment Services – Donar

In Washtenaw County there were 68 opioid related deaths in 2018, more than one a week. Emergency room admissions due to opioid misuse climb higher and higher. Packard Health has stepped up to this crisis with a team of addiction experts, led by Dr. Ankoor Soni and Dr. Sara Bur. Based on the latest models of care, Packard Health’s Medication Assisted Treatment program is making a difference in troubled lives. We are excited about our new partnership with the Emergency Department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.

Prenatal Care – Donar

Everyone deserves a successful start in life! Everyone wants a pregnancy that is as enjoyable and routine as possible. With our Packard’s Prenatal Program, mothers-to-be enjoy the ease of prenatal appointments at our 3 locations, and delivery at state-of-the-art University of Michigan Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital. Packard Health specializes in care for all ages and warmly welcomes newborns to our family of care.

Supportive Services – Donar

Packard Health supports our patients with services that help remove barriers to health and well being. We offer assistance with food, transportation, and medication expense. We connect patients with community resources as well as state and federal aid. We know all about health care insurance and are certified enrollment specialists. Katie Marquez, Patient Advocate Coordinator, meets with families in need every day and sees the difference these services make. “I’m really excited to be participating in the A2 Marathon event!”

ER tests uncovered a much more serious health issue – diabetes. Marla was advised to schedule an appointment at Packard Health, which provides care to uninsured patients and offers a sliding fee scale.

The very next day, frightened and unwell, Marla called our office and was given an “urgent” appointment with Dr. Vicky Nichols. The receptionist alerted Karen Koeppe, Certified Diabetes Educator and Care Coordinator. Karen printed the ER visit notes, lab studies and discharge summary, debriefed Dr. Nichols, and met with Marla and her mother in a co-visit with the doctor.

Fears and concerns were defused, further in-office testing completed, free diabetes medication, blood glucose meter and test strips given.

Because Marla is low income and food insecure, she was assisted in Packard Health’s food pantry and given fresh produce.

Two appointments were set up for Marla – one with Marisa Iadorosa, Patient Advocate, to apply for the Healthy Michigan Plan (Medicaid), and one with Karen Koeppe for comprehensive diabetes self-management education.

In an hour visit to Packard Health, Marla was reassuringly started on a path to better health. She is part of a team now, working together to improve her well-being.
