Healthy habits - Cancer screening

March 7, 2018

Colorectal CancerWhat if there were tests to find cancer in people who have no symptoms? Or tests to find the disease in its earliest, most treatable forms, or before it even begins?

There are! These tests are cancer screens - and they SAVE LIVES. Maybe yours!

Packard Health care providers know all about cancer screening.

Sometimes it's hard to start talking about it - we're here to help. We can discuss which test is best for you, and our office staff can advise on coverage options. Cancer screens do not have to be expensive.

3 Screens that save lives...

1.  COLON

Cancer screening can prevent some colorectal cancers from developing by detecting & removing polyps before they are cancerous. When colon cancer is detected early, it can often be cured.

If you are 50 years or older, or have a family history, talk with your Packard Health provider.

There are several tests to choose from, including one that can be done at home without any special preparation -
the fecal occult blood test.

2. CERVIX - For Women

The PAP test is painless and it saves lives - and you can ask for one of Packard Health's female providers.

The cervix is the opening of your uterus (womb). Cervical cancer does not cause symptoms until it is advanced, so it is important to get screened even when you feel healthy.

Cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer death in women in the US. The PAP test dramatically cut those numbers because cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable when found early.

3. BREAST - For Women

A mammogram is an X-ray of your breast. It is the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms. Having regular mammograms can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer.

Mammograms are covered by most health insurance programs. You can get a screening mammogram without any out-of-pocket costs. If you are worried about the cost or don't have health insurance, talk to Packard Health staff to review your options.
